Purple Perigord

No category - 28/11/2021

In the land of bastides and wines

Pécharmant, Monbazillac, Saussignac, Montravel, Rosette, all these words ring in the ears of travellers who enter this part of the Périgord, named Purple in reference to the autumnal colours of the vine leaves. Drown yourself in this sea of vines where you will always find a cellar or a castle offering an unforgettable tasting.

With thirteen AOCs, there is something for every palate: red, white or rosé, dry or sweet, drinking or ageing wine. Visit Château Monbazillac with its building and vineyards.

Taste the wine of Château Tirecul la Gravière (sic). Its sweet wine is magnificent with a mirabelle plum tart. A true nectar of the gods. Wines whose vintages reach in each vintage summits of quality and richness while being produced in biodynamy.

This region also has some nice surprises in store for lovers of beautiful stonework with its villages, châteaux and bastides. But first stop in Bergerac, famous for its old streets and timber-framed houses.

Then continue your journey and visit charming villages such as Lalinde, Limeuil or Trémolat.

In Limeuil, visit its panoramic garden and its streets with old stone houses, in Tremolat its cingle (loop of river) and the old town. Finally, after the river, we arrive in the country of the bastides Eymet, Beaumont du Périgord, Monpazier… Splendid. But if there was only one, go to Monpazier. Selected by the association Plus Beaux Villages de France, you will not know where to turn. There are so many buildings to discover between its narrow streets, its square and its houses.

And don't leave the Purple Perigord without visiting the castle of Biron. Considered as a major site of Aquitaine and located at the extreme south of the territory, it dominates the borders of the Gers, Quercy and Périgord from its promontory. Along with Bourdeilles, Beynac and Mareuil, it is one of the four baronies of Périgord. Each century has left its mark since the Middle Ages, giving a particular appeal to this phenomenal architectural ensemble.

But let's stop here, so many other secret and mysterious places are waiting for you.

So enjoy your walk and get lost… !!!!
